Chelsea could be set to make a surprise bid to sign former Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli from AC Milan this January, according to the Metro.

The Italian international has been in fine form since leaving the Premier League for Serie A, scoring 15 goals in 17 matches for Milan, and is now seen as a possible answer to Chelsea’s problems upfront.

With the likes of Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o struggling to perform consistently, Blues manager Jose Mourinho targeted a number of big-name strikers during the summer, most notably Wayne Rooney from Manchester United.

However, he failed to land Rooney or other targets upfront, and could be in the market for a striker again this January, with Balotelli now looking like a contender to make the move to Stamford Bridge.

The 23-year-old is known for his attitude problems and behavioural issues off the pitch, and that could tempt Milan to sell him on just a year after signing him, with Chelsea possibly willing to offer as much as £30m to sign the eccentric attacker.

Balotelli has played under Mourinho before, when the pair were at Inter Milan, and the Chelsea boss could be the man to get Balotelli on the straight and narrow.
