Gunners favourites to land FC Basel starlet.
Arsenal look likely to beat off competition from a host of European clubs for the signing of promising young Basel defender Fabian Schar, according to talkSPORT.
The Gunners are keen to strengthen defensively when the transfer window opens again in January, with only Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny for Arsene Wenger to pick from as his centre-back pairing at the moment.
The out-of-form Thomas Vermaelen remains at the club for now as a backup player, though it is widely thought that the former Ajax man could move on in the winter if Arsenal can bring in a replacement.
The likes of Kurt Zouma have also come on to Wenger’s radar as he eyes a promising young addition at the back to provide cover for his main two centre-halves, though Schar now looks to be the Frenchman’s top target.
Several other top clubs have been monitoring the 21-year-old’s fine progress at Basel, with Juventus believed to be another main candidate to snap him up this season, but it is thought that Arsenal are in pole position for him at the moment.
Schar became a regular for his club last season, and already has three caps for the senior Swiss national side.
