Premier League giants Chelsea are said to be pondering making a move for highly-rated Paris Saint-Germain midfield player Blaise Matuidi as soon as the winter transfer window opens again for business in the new year, according to reports in the Daily Express.

The west London club are known to currently be on the look-out for a new powerful holding midfielder to replace Nigeria international John Obi Mikel in the role going forward at Stamford Bridge, with returning Blues head coach Jose Mourinho believed to be weighing up the respective merits of both Matuidi and Real Madrid’s experienced Spaniard Xabi Alonso.

However, it is understood that of the two players, the Portuguese is currently favouring PSG’s France international, who is both younger at 26 years of age and also likely to be far cheaper than Alonso to bring to the capital too, with Matuidi’s current deal at the Parc des Princes now set to run out on June 30 2014.

As a result, the Ligue 1 champions are thought to be keen to offload Matuidi at the turn of the year for a nominal transfer fee, rather than risk losing the defensive midfield player for nothing at the end of this current campaign.
