Liverpool are reportedly one of a number of clubs who have contacted Barcelona in relation to their interest in young 21 year old midfielder Sergi Roberto according to El Mundo Deportivo.

The youngster has struggled to retain a foothold in Gerardo Martino’s first team set-up and is said to be ready to hand in a transfer request though his release clause is currently a fairly hefty €20m (£17m), a fee that Liverpool may baulk at given the Spanish Under 21 international’s relative inexperience.

AC Milan and Tottenham are also said to be keen on the locally born starlet who has thus far this season managed just three sub appearances in La Liga, which is perhaps unsurprising given the raft of talent ahead of him in the Barcelona pecking order.

A move for Roberto would adhere to Liverpool’s youthful transfer policy though they are likely to look to launch an offer less than the inflated release clause.

Roberto has eight Under 21 caps to his name and has made a total of just one La Liga start since breaking into the first team set-up in November 2010.
