World and European champions Spain have decided to leave Chelsea front man Fernando Torres out of their squad for this month’s international friendly double header, with Brazil-born Atletico de Madrid striker Diego Costa being called up for the very first time instead to replace the forward, according to reports in the Daily Mail.

Torres recently suffered a muscle injury in his leg during training which has kept the attacker on the sidelines for the west London club’s previous two fixtures, against Newcastle United in the Premier League and Schalke 04 in the Uefa Champions League.

And with Chelsea head coach Jose Mourinho predicting that the in-form 29-year-old would be out of action for two weeks, la Roja manager Vincente del Bosque has opted not to risk the marksman for the upcoming friendly internationals against Guinea on Nov 16th and South Africa three days later.

However, Del Bosque has decided though to finally call prolific Atletico front man Costa into his squad, despite the fact that the player has already appeared in two non-competitive fixtures for the country of his birth, five-time world champions Brazil, earlier this year.

But after finding the back of the net on an impressive 16 occasions in total so far in this campaign in just 16 matches in all competitions for Atlei, Del Bosque has now handed the 25-year-old his chance to stake a claim for a place in the defending champions’ squad for next year’s tournament in his homeland.
