Anfield side want Schalke captain.
Liverpool are reportedly one of the leading contenders to sign highly rated Schalke centre-back Benedikt Howedes according to Sports Direct News.
The 25 year old German international is apparently open to the possibility of leaving Schalke though he is tied down to a long term contract. Brendan Rodgers has not given up hope of signing the strong tackling defender and could make an offer for the player in January.
Howedes joined Schalke at the age of 13 but may feel the time is right to consider a fresh challenge and the fact that his side is some way off the top of the table pace, sitting in sixth spot some 12 points off Bayern Munich at the top of the pile, could perhaps make a move to Liverpool all the more tempting.
However Rodgers may well have to make room for a possible central defensive addition by offloading one of his current defensive options.
With Martin Skrtel back in the Liverpool fold after missing much of the end of the last campaign, and the arrival of Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure, even Daniel Agger has at times been left warming the bench.
