Powell is in the middle of a season long loan spell at Martinez’s form club Wigan Athletic and may well have been receiving reports as to his progress at the DW Stadium and the Spaniard may feel he is in a good bargaining position knowing just how badly David Moyes wants Baines, having failed with two summer bids for the 28 year old.
19 year old England Under 21 international Powell has been a big success during his temporary Latics switch, scoring five goals in 11 starts in all competitions thus far and perhaps Moyes feels the loss of the young talent is a sacrifice worth considering in his pursuit of Baines.
Moyes successfully completed the summer signing of Marouane Fellaini in a deal worth £27.5m and the former Everton boss will look to Baines to replace veteran Patrice Evra as the club’s first choice left-back with the French veteran linked with a move back to Ligue 1.
