FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has thanked his millions of fans throughout the world for all their messages of support following the recent announcement that the Argentinian will be out of action until the new year.

The playmaker picked up yet another hamstring injury during the Spanish champions’ resounding 4-1 win over Real Betis in La Liga on the weekend, with the diminutive Argentina international being forced from the field of play clutching the back of his leg in the opening 25 minutes of the contest in Seville.

And now the Catalan giants have confirmed their worst fears with the news that the 26-year-old could now be on the sidelines until the middle of January, with the Barcelona medical staff understood to be absolutely determined to ensure that their star man does not return to action too prematurely once again.

Messi has been dogged by a succession of muscle-related injuries over the years that have restricted his appearances for Barca, although both he and his club are still said to be hopeful that the attacker could be back in time to feature in their crucial top-of-the-table clash with Atletico de Madrid on Jan 12.

Either way, Messi himself has since taken to Facebook to thank his supporters, writing: “As many of you know, over the next few weeks I will be working full-time on the recovery of this new injury, for me it is a pity not to play with my team right now…

“Now the most important thing is to be recovered well for helping my teammates and for giving back all the support you’ve given to me in the best way I know how to do, playing football. Thank you for your messages!”
