Newcastle United are set to make a bid to land Borussia Monchengladbach striker Luuk de Jong on loan when the transfer market reopens in January, the Daily Star reports.

The 23-year-old was once a target for several Premier League sides when he joined ‘Gladbach from Ajax back in 2012 for a fee of over £12m.
However, despite a promising opening season he has failed to make a single appearance this term and now looks set to head for the exit on a short term loan deal in the new year and Newcastle are believed to be readying a move as they look to bring in extra firepower to their front line.
Borussia board member Hans Meyer has suggested that De Jong could be allowed to leave by saying: “We will possibly loan Luuk at Christmas but definitely not to a competitor.
“Our head coach Lucien Favre has said from the start he didn’t have 100% confidence in De Jong filling the striker position but I think we’ll find a solution.”
de Jong himself said: “I want to play for Borussia, that’s my goal. If the team needs me, I’m ready. I want to play from the first minute onwards.”
