Both Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United have suffered a huge blow in their efforts to sign highly rated Real Madrid holding midfield player Sami Khedira when the winter transfer window opens again for business in the new year after the German suffered a serious knee injury playing for his country on Friday night, according to reports on talkSPORT.co.uk.

The 26-year-old picked up the problem during Germany’s 1-1 draw with Italy in a friendly international, with Khedira tearing his anterior cruciate ligament.

And despite the Germany international having since undergone successful surgery on the damaged area, it is still expected that Khedira will be out of action for at least the next six months, meaning that neither the Blues or the Red Devils will now push ahead with their previous plans to sign the player come the turn of the year.

Both top-flight outfits had originally planned on making a move for the defensive midfield player in January after learning of Khedira’s current unhappiness at the Santiago Bernabeu following the departure of previous head coach Jose Mourinho to Stamford Bridge at the end of last season.

However, United and Chelsea will now have to jettison those plans and look elsewhere for new midfield targets next year instead.
