Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has claimed that recent new Arsenal signing Mesut Ozil left the Spanish champions for the Gunners after being told that he would no longer be an automatic first choice at the Santiago Bernabeu, according to reports in the Mail on Sunday.

The coveted Germany international caused more than a few raised eyebrows when he decided to quit los Blancos to move to the Emirates in the final hours on transfer deadline, with the 25-year-old eventually agreeing a bumper six-year contract worth a staggering £200,000 per week.

Meanwhile, the north London club themselves also forked out a club-record transfer fee of £42.4 million in order to bring Ozil to the Premier League, with the playmaker having more than lived up to his star billing in the time that he has been at the club.

However, new Madrid boss Ancelotti has now revealed that the real reason that the German decided to leave the Spanish capital last summer was because the Italian had told his midfield player that he could no longer guarantee him a first-team place at the White House this season, with the experienced trainer going on to explain that Argentinian wide man Angel Di Maria was more of a team player than Ozil.

“Ozil wasn’t comfortable. I knew he’d been speaking with another club because he wanted to leave,” said Ancelotti.

“Mesut understood that he had competition, that he wouldn’t be able to play every game – and ‘I’m off’ was his answer.

“I prefer to have Angel Di Maria for the team’s balance. Di Maria is better than Ozil for group dynamics.”
