St James’ Park side must battle Hull City for Irish international.

Newcastle United and Hull City are battling each other in pursuit of West Brom forward Shane Long according to the Daily Star.

The 26 year old is yet to be offered a new contract by the Baggies and has started just five Premier League fixtures thus far this term due the arrival of the Nicolas Anelka and Stephane Sessegnon to the Hawthorns and Alan Pardew may well see the former Reading man as the ideal man to boost his Magpies attack.

Newcastle United have scored 15 goals in 11 Premier League fixtures this season but seven of those came from loaned in Frenchman Loic Remy with Papiss Cisse continuing his appalling run of form with the Senegal international failing to net in ten top tier fixtures this term.

Steve Bruce would also like to land Long but one imagines a move to Newcastle United would be more enticing than a Hull City switch, though it should be noted that the KC Stadium side have surprised many this season and currently sit handily in 12th spot in the table.

Long has netted 20 goals in 79 appearances for West Brom, prior to which he scored 55 goals for Reading.
