Spanish giants Barcelona are reportedly keeping tabs on Wolfsburg midfielder Luis Gustavo with the view of making a move for the player in January as a possible replacement for Alex Song should he move on, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Gustavo had been a target for the club over the summer, but his situation at Bayern meant that he was not prepared to wait around for an offer to come his way and he took the best one available at the time.

Having made a name for himself at Hoffenheim he made the move to Munich in the January transfer window of 2011 for a fee of somewhere between €15-20m. He had made a headway into the squad over the following two seasons but saw his playing time diminish last term thanks to the arrival of Javi Martinez, and he was expecting to play even less this time around following the acquisition of Thiago Alcantara.

However, Barca’s plans have hit a snag in the road as he put pen-to-paper on a deal to keep him at Wolfsburg until 2018 and will have to pay handsomely if they want to bring him to the Nou Camp.
