Liverpool And Everton Combined Merseyside Derby XI

Posted by

The best combined team that Merseyside has to offer.

Check in to Everton vs Liverpool

The two Merseyside giants go head-to-head this weekend for the first derby between the two this season, and with both team’s in fine form so far the chances are this encounter will be lively to say the least.

Both sides have some exceptionally talented players in their ranks, and below is our representation of the best starting XI combining the two.

Goalkeeper

Tim Howard – Everton

Though Simon Mignolet has been in fine form this season, stepping capably into the shoes of the now departed Pepe Reina, but he has some way to go before he can match up to the consistency of the American international. Rarely does Howard make a blunder, and his longevity shows no sign of letting up as he heads into his mid-30s.

Defence

Leighton Baines – Everton

Baines is the most not only the most talented left-back in the city but in the entire Premier League too. His delivery from out wide and danger from set pieces make him a viable threat going forward, but where others lack in their defensive work the 28-year-old doesn’t forget his duties and is a competent all rounder.

Daniel Agger – Liverpool

The big Danish international has been in such good form over the past two seasons that Barcelona are even considering him as an eventual replacement for the ageing Carles Puyol and may even be set to make a move for the player in January. Solid as a rock at the back and even capable of offering a threat from set pieces, Agger would undoubtedly be the first centre back on the team sheet here.

Phil Jagielka – Everton

Never the most glamorous of players, the Evertonian stopper is a competent practitioner of the defensive arts and goes about his business in such a way that a fuss is rarely made. Now considered an England regular, his quiet influence will be vital to the Toffees not only during the game but throughout the season too.

Glen Johnson – Liverpool

Still the best choice at right-back between the two. When his injury problems aren’t catching up with him he is still one of the best in the league.
