The Vicente Calderon side have relied upon loaned in Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois for the past three seasons but are preparing for the very real possibility that the Belgian will either return to Stamford Bridge of secure a move elsewhere, with Barcelona said to be very keen on the youngster.
Therefore Simeone has earmarked a move for Dutch international Krul, who has been in excellent form this term.
The 25 year old has been in fine form this season and may feel that the chance to join a side who are likely to be competing at Champions League level hard to turn down at this stage of his career.
Krul could feel that such a move would help him to secure a more prominent role in Louis van Gaal’s Dutch national team set-up.
Atletico Madrid currently sit in second spot in La Liga having won 12 of their opening 14 matches and have conceded just nine goals in the process, meaning Krul would have quite a big void to fill if Courtois did indeed leave the Spanish club.
