Jurgen Klopp has seen his first choice central defensive pair both hit by long term injury problems with Mats Hummels out until January and Neven Subotic out for the entire season and as such the Dortmund boss is looking at other potential options.
It’s unlikely that Arsene Wenger will entertain the notion of sending Vermaelen to the Bundesliga side on a loan deal as he represents Arsenal’s best back-up option to first choice pair Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny and having seen Sebastien Squillaci offloaded and Johan Djourou loaned out to Hamburg, the North London club is not overly blessed with options of their own, though Bacary Sagna has proved himself very capable of filling in if needs be.
Though it’s true that an extended period on the bench is not helping Vermaelen in terms of his position within the Belgian national team squad, ahead of the 2014 World Cup finals, this is perhaps not a matter that concerns Arsene Wenger a great deal.
