Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is known to be interested in the 27 year old and the Stamford Bridge club may well be in the market to spend big to improve their squad after an indifferent start to the current season.
Ramos can play at centre-back or as right-back and Mourinho may feel he is a preferable option to the options he currently has in both positions.
Mourinho has the likes of John Terry, Gary Cahill, David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic to call upon at centre-back and has opted in the main to use Serbian Ivanovic in preference to Cesar Azpilicueta on the right hand side of his defence.
Ramos is supremely talented and has racked up 368 appearances for Real Madrid and has 115 national team caps to his name and has won just about every honour available to him though European club silverware has alluded him.
A fee of £54m would represent a British transfer record, which Chelsea currently hold following their signing of Fernando Torres.
Man City are also said to be keen on Ramos, with former Real Madrid man Manuel Pellegrini perhaps having a better relationship with the former Sevilla man than Mourinho.
Ramos collected the 17th red card of his Real Madrid career during the Spanish giants win over Galatasaray.
