The German international has been something of a bit-part player this season, chiefly due to the sheer weight of numbers when it comes to central midfield options open to Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas, the 23 year old managing just four Premier League starts thus far.

One does wonder whether the former Schalke man would be willing to take the ‘step-down’ a move to Swansea City could represent, or whether the youngster would be keen to attempt to force his way into securing a more prominent role in Tottenham’s plans.

The likes of Sandro, Moussa Dembele, Paulinho, Etienne Capoue, Christian Eriksen are all vying for spots in areas that Holtby can fill so clearly there is quite a fight for first team options at White Hart Lane.

Holtby has proved a success in cup action this term, providing five assists in seven appearances in the Europa League and Capital One Cup.
