It has long been known that the current Premier League leaders have been interested in the versatile Switzerland international, especially after Gunners head coach Arsene Wenger sent scout Neil Banfield over to St. Jakob-Park to watch Schar in action on several occasions.

However, Arsenal now face a fight to be able to land the 21-year-old in the new year after Tottenham director of football Franco Baldini was also spotted in the crowd at Basel on Tuesday night as the Swiss champions played host to Chelsea in their Uefa Champions League group-stage fixture.

And the Italian cannot have failed to be impressed with Schar’s eye-catching display at the back as Spurs continue their search for a new central defender, with Basel completing a memorable double over the Uefa Europa League holders with their second straight 1-0 win.

As a result, it now looks as though both London giants will move for the £10 million-rated Swiss in January.
