The 31-year-old has been consistently linked with a move away from the north London outfit in the new year because of a lack of playing time this season and last week reports emerged that he was close to agreeing a deal to join the Canadian club when the transfer window re-opens.
And now reports suggest that talks between the player and club are at an advanced stage and could be announced as a done deal next week.
The proposed deal would be set to earn the England international a whopping £90,000 per week and will join other former Premier League stars Thierry Henry, Tim Cahill and Robbie Keane in winding down their careers in the United States.
Defoe has spent the bulk of his career with Spurs but has grown disillusioned at the club after falling down the pecking order behind summer signing Roberto Soldado in the pecking order.
Manager Andre Villas-Boas is now likely to dip into the transfer market for a new striker as he is also set to allow Emmanuel Adebayor leave the club too.
