Out-of-favour Chelsea defender Ashley Cole is said to be desperate to remain at Stamford Bridge next season by convincing Blues head coach Jose Mourinho that he is still good enough to be playing in west London beyond the end of his current contract, which run out next summer, according to reports in the Daily Telegraph.

The experienced England international has found himself in the rare position of not being the club’s first-choice left back of late, with the self-styled ‘Special One’ instead preferring to utilise Spanish right-back Cesar Azpilicueta in that role.

And with Cole’s current deal with the Uefa Europa League holders now set to expire on June 30 2014, recent rumours have been suggesting that the 32-year-old will not be offered a one-year contract extension to keep the full back in the capital beyond the end of this campaign, especially in view of his exclusion from the first team ever since Chelsea lost to Newcastle United at St James’ Park in the Premier League last month.

In fact, stories over the weekend suggested that Cole was on his way to Major League Soccer franchise the New York Red Bulls when the winter transfer window reopened in January, but the player himself is believed to be determined to prove to Mourinho that he is worth a contract extension after all.
