The brilliant young shot stopper has been with the Blues now since July 2011, when Courtois arrived at the west London club from Belgium giants Genk on a five-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

However, remarkably the 21-year-old has still to make a single appearance for the Uefa Europa League holders yet in the intervening two-year period, with Courtois having spent the past two-and-half seasons on loan with La Liga high-flyers Atletico de Madrid.

And it is during his time at the Vincente Calderon that the Belgium international has gone on to establish himself as being without doubt the best young keeper currently plying his trade on the Continent, so much so that Mourinho has now asked his backup to return to the capital at the end of this campaign and sign a three-year contract extension to keep him at the Bridge until the summer of 2019.

But Courtois will only put pen to paper on such a deal if the Portuguese can guarantee that he is given a fair opportunity to dislodge Czech Republic international Cech as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper in the next campaign.
