Man United’s board are reportedly set to discuss potential contingency plans should the Old Trafford side fail to secure an all important Champions League berth at the end of the current campaign.

CaughtOffside understands that whilst the Premier League title holders are on the face of it fully backing boss David Moyes they are privately concerned about the club’s poor showing thus far this season.

The Scot was appointed in the summer chiefly due to the personal backing he received from his predecessor Sir Alex Ferguson but Man United may be forced to act swiftly to axe the former Everton manager should he fail to secure, at the very least, a top four finish.

Indeed such is the concern that there is a certain amount of reticence about providing large sums to invest in the squad during the January transfer window for fear that this outlay fails to lead to tangible success which in turn would result in a new appointment who would also then demand further investment in the squad.

Man United find themselves in ninth place in the Premier League table having collected just six wins from their opening 14 matches and there is a growing sentiment that David Moyes may be out of his depth at the English giants.

Moyes has been employed on a six year contract and whilst Man United know that bringing that deal to a halt at the end of the season would entail a hefty pay off there are many who would deem that preferable to the club being led by a manager not suitable for the post and the high expectations that are associated with a side of their stature.

With this in mind Man United will look to draw up possible targets to takeover from Moyes should the club continue to nosedive.

Man United have finished in the top four in the top tier in each of the past 22 seasons and anything less will seemingly result in a change of management less than a year into David Moyes’s Old Trafford reign.
