Premier League leaders Arsenal have missed out on signing FC Barcelona youngster Antonio Sanabria, with the Paraguayan front man set to join Serie A giants AS Roma instead, according to reports on the International Business Times.

The 17-year-old, who is already a full Paraguay international, has been at Camp Nou since 2009, when Sanabria joined the Catalans’ famed youth academy at La Masia aged just 13.

However, despite the starlet being handed a call-up to the Barca ‘B’ team by previous head coach Tito Villanova in September 2012, and since going on to score two goals in his eight Segunda Division matches for the club, Sanabria believes that he is now good enough to be featuring in the club’s first team.

So much so that Sanabria has decided that he must leave Catalunya in order to be given more regular opportunities, although reports had suggested that the player was heading to north London at the end of this campaign to play for the Gunners.

But that is not now believed to be the case, with Sanabria instead moving to the Italian capital after Roma agreed to pay the £2.5 million release clause in the striker’s current contract with Barcelona, that runs until June 30 2015.
