Rising star Barkley has enjoyed a successful campaign so far this season, finally making his breakthrough into the Goodison Park starting XI as well as making his first tentative steps toward international recognition too with Roy Hodgson’s England side.

And in the process he has caught the attention of the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea with his assured displays. David Moyes of course has worked with him during his own time on Merseyside and is keen to bring him to Old Trafford, whereas Blues chief Jose Mourinho has sent scouts to watch him on numerous occasions.

Barkley only put pen-to-paper on a four-and-a-half year deal in December 2011, and will be offered a longer deal with a significant pay rise in order to keep him in Liverpool.

Veteran defender Sylvain Distin, 36, is also set to be offered a short term extension on his current deal, which expires at the end of the season.
