Chelsea have pulled out of the running to sign in-demand Inter Milan midfield player Fredy Guarin, leaving the path clear for London rivals Tottenham Hotspur to make their own move for the £17 million-rated South American when the winter transfer window opens again for business in the new year, according to reports in the Daily Express.

The experienced Colombia international is set to leave the Serie A outfit next month as Inter prepare to embark on a major overhaul of the first-team squad at the turn of the year, with the club understood to be willing to offload their star midfielder in order to help fund other new purchases in January.

And if reports back in Italy are to be believed, then Inter sporting director Marco Branca and Guarin’s agent, Marcelo Ferreyra, both flew to London on Thursday to begin discussions over the sale of the highly rated 27-year-old.

However, it was to north London that the two men were heading to, as opposed to the west of the capital, after it emerged that the Blues had now dropped their own interest in Guarin, leaving the path clear for Tottenham head coach Andre Villas-Boas to once again be reunited with his former player who he previously worked with at FC Porto.
