The 20 year old is considered one of the hottest prospects in European football and Rodgers was in attendance as Schalke overcame FC Basel in midweek and the goal-scoring midfielder may well be considering his options ahead of the January transfer window.

The £45m rated German international has already racked up 132 club appearances, scoring 26 goals, and has ten national team caps and is sure to be a prominent member of Joachim Low’s 2014 World Cup finals squad.

Liverpool will have to beat off interest from Chelsea and Arsenal to land Draxler, with Jose Mourinho ready to use Belgian Kevin de Bruyne as bait to win the race for the Schalke man.

Though Anfield skipper Steven Gerrard has displayed consistently good form over the past 18 months the 33 year old is clearly in the latter stages of his career and Draxler may well be the ideal man to eventually fill the void left when the England man hangs up his boots.
