On Friday afternoon the club called a press conference to announce 24-year-old Brazilian striker Gilberto Oliveira Souza Junior as their new designated player to a slightly disappointed crowd.

Toronto’s fans have good reason to be slightly skeptical having experienced a similar situation last year when it was believed that Diego Forlan would be joining the club, but this time around it appears as though the deal to bring Defoe stateside is all but a done deal.

And The Toronto Sun is now reporting that he will become the highest paid MLS player ever in the off season when he signs a deal worth $10m per season.

However, it still remains to be seen whether he will join the club in the new year or wait until the summer and after England’s World Cup campaign as he will want to spend the season in Europe to give himself a better shot at making it into Roy Hodgson’s plans.
