Madrid man is coveted by ex-manager.
Napoli coach Rafael Benitez is hoping to beat two of his former clubs to the signature of in demand Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso when the transfer window re-opens in January, according to reports in Sports Direct News.
Both Liverpool and Chelsea are hoping to bring the experienced Spanish international back to the Premier League in the new year as he enters the final six months of his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, though Madrid are hoping to strike a new deal to keep him at the club for another year at least.
Serie A giants Juventus are also said to be interested in bringing him on board, but reports coming from Italy now seem to suggest that Rafa Benitez is set to jump ahead of the queue in order to take him away from the Spanish capital.
Benitez has of course worked with Alonso before at Liverpool, where the pair won the Champions League together in 2005, and he is now keen to reunite with the 32-year-old at the San Paolo in the winter, rather than waiting for his contract to run down in the summer.
Alonso has previously stated that he would like to stay with Madrid, but may look to see what his options are before making a final decision.
