The 28-year-old has played just 11 games for the title contenders so far this term and could look to make a return to the Italian top flight as early as next summer should his situation at the Etihad not improve.

Kolarov joined up with City back in 2010 from Lazio, and has recently been linked with moves to both Inter Milan and Napoli, and the Serbian international has admitted that he would be more than open to making a move back to the league where he spent three happy years before moving to England.

“I would love to return to the Italian league one day,” he said.

“I have seen stories about me going back, although I have not spoken to anyone about it.

“I’ve been playing more since Manuel Pellegrini’s arrival. But let’s see what happens.”

Kolarov has notched up 12 goals in 108 appearances for the northwest outfit, and was a key part in their title victory in 2011-12.
