Coach Carlo Ancelotti decided during the club’s pre-season tour of the United States that former number two Diego Lopez would take precedence for league games, whilst Casillas would be mostly used in Copa Del Rey and Champions League encounters.
However, reports in Spain have suggested that this system will continue on into the new year, meaning that Casillas will have to decide quickly whether he wants to carry on with the way things are, or make a move elsewhere to take over as first choice in a bid to regain his place in the Spanish squad in time for next year’s World Cup.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has made himself known as an admirer of the player, but is waiting for the player to officially state that he wants to leave the Spanish capital before making a formal offer.
Should Casillas make the switch to north London, though, he would be cup tied for the rest of their Champions League campaign.
