The west London club have been keeping close tabs on the highly rated Colombia international for some time now, however, Blues head coach Jose Mourinho has been forced to step up his club’s chase of Guarin after it was revealed that arch rivals Manchester United were also interested in the 27-year-old.

However, after Chelsea met with officials from the Serie A outfit for face-to-face talks earlier this week, including Inter technical director Marco Branca, the two parties appear to now be close to reaching an agreement for the player after the Italians had initially rejected the west Londoners’ opening bid of £12m for Guarin.

And that will come as a big relief to Mourinho, who tried to sign the South American during his time in charge of La Liga side Real Madrid, with the Portuguese said to be desperate for more bodies in the midfield areas at Stamford Bridge in the second half of this season following the loss to a long-term knee injury of Netherlands international Marco van Ginkel at the start of the campaign.
