High-flying Premier League outfit Everton face a major battle to keep hold of star man Leighton Baines when the winter transfer window finally opens again for business in the new year, with Premier League champions Manchester United understood to still be keen on signing the defender next month, according to reports in the Mail on Sunday.

The Premier League giants have been keeping close tabs on Baines ever since new head coach David Moyes took over from former manager Sir Alex Ferguson at the end of the previous campaign, with the Scot knowing the left back well from their time working together at Goodison Park.

However, despite lodging a number of bids with the Toffees during the previous transfer window last summer, Moyes was unable to convince the Merseysiders to allow the 29-year-old to leave the club.

But with current United left-back Patrice Evra still expecting to leave Old Trafford at the end of this current campaign to return home to France due to unspecified personal reasons, and Moyes said to be unconvinced about the credentials of back-up full-back Alexander Buttner, it is expected that United will return with an improved offer for Baines next month.
