The City manager is on the lookout for a new custodian in the new year after losing faith in regular number one Joe Hart earlier on in the season and is now largely expected to head out on loan.

And Pellegrini is now said to be ready to turn his attentions towards Vermeer, who is believed to be keen on making a move away from Ajax in January in order to give himself a shot at making the Netherlands national team for next summer’s World Cup.

Vermeer is considered a reliable goalkeeper, but has fallen down the pecking order at Ajax and City are planning to take advantage of his desire to leave and could land him for a knock down fee.

“I need to playing and I’m not doing that at Ajax,” Vermeer told a Dutch newspaper.

“I have other options and will discuss them with my agent in January. You never know what is around the corner in football.”

Vermeer is valued around £2m.
