A trio of big-name Premier League clubs are said to all be interested in signing experienced Real Madrid defensive midfield player Xabi Alonso when the Spaniard’s current contract runs out at the end of this campaign, according to reports in the Daily Star.

The holding midfield player’s present deal at the Santiago Bernabeu lasts until June 30 2014 and despite recent stories coming out of Spain suggesting that the 32-year-old had finally agreed to put pen to paper on a contract extension with the La Liga giants, that does not now appear to be the case after all.

And if recent comments by los Blancos head coach Carlo Ancelotti are anything to go by, then Alonso’s days in the Spanish capital could very well be numbered.

“The club has no further information regarding his renewal,” said Ancelotti when recently questioned on the matter by the Spanish press.

“But if he signs or not, he is our player until the summer of 2014 and if he is available, he will play.

“We have other important players and have played half of the season without him and the results have been good.”

And if the coveted Spain international were to suddenly become available at the end of this campaign, then the likes of Premier League champions Manchester United, Uefa Europa League holders Chelsea and his former club Liverpool are all understood to be interested in bringing Alonso back to the English top flight.
