Premier League leaders Liverpool are interested in signing up-and-coming Oldham Athletic defender James Tarkowski when the winter transfer window opens again for business at the start of next month, according to reports in the Daily Star.

The 21-year-old centre back has made a real name for himself ever since breaking into the Oldham first team two years ago, with it understood that Tarkowski has been closely tracked by as many as 14 different Premier League and Championship clubs since the start of this campaign.
However, it is believed that it is the Merseyside giants who are now in pole position to lure the in-demand central defender to Anfield in January, with it said that a transfer fee of £2 million plus the inclusion of a member of the Reds first team too could be enough to seal a deal for Tarkowski.
Tarkowski, who only agreed to put pen to paper on a two-year contract extension last summer, has managed to find the back of the net on five occasions in his 62 league outings for the club since 2011.
Meanwhile, so far in this current campaign, the youngster has already hit the target on two occasion in his 18 League One outings for Oldham.
