The Spanish international, who has missed a great deal of the current campaign through injury, is yet to put pen to paper on a new Bernabeu contract and is set to leave Real Madrid in the summer and Brendan Rodgers apparently hopes to bring Alonso back to Anfield.

The 32 year old may well feel it’s the right time to leave Real Madrid following the summer signings of Isco and Asier Illarramendi and a return to Merseyside could perhaps tempt the World Cup winner.

Rodgers doesn’t have a huge number of central midfield options in his squad and with Steven Gerrard struggling with injury concerns there is perhaps a need to consider a move for the hugely experienced, and very able, Real Madrid star.

It’s a move that would certainly please the Liverpool faithful, who still fondly hold Alonso in high regard and if brought in January such an addition could greatly aid the club’s push for that all important top four finish.

Alonso enjoyed five successful seasons with Liverpool prior to his £30m switch to Real Madrid, during which time he helped the club to a Champions League final triumph as well as a Premier League runners-up spot.
