It is understood that the Northern Irishman has been keeping close tabs on the highly rated Croatia international on a number of occasions over the course of the past few months with a view to bringing the player to Anfield when the January transfer window opens next week.

So far in this campaign for both club and country, Rakitic has managed to register an eye-catching nine goals and 12 assists in total in just 28 matches in all competitions, including an equally impressive seven strikes and eight assists in only 15 La Liga contests for his club.

And it is those kind of brilliant attacking numbers that are believed to have persuaded Rodgers to lure the 25-year-old to Merseyside in January as Liverpool attempt to build on the brilliant start to the season that they have made so far.

However, with the Croat currently contracted to the Southern Spanish outfit until June 30 2015, the Reds know that it will not be cheap to sign Rakitic.
