Jones has enjoyed a regular run in the United starting XI so far this term, bar a short spell out in November that ruled him out of joining up with the England national side.

The 21-year-old stopper was expected to be in the first team for United’s Boxing Day clash with Hull City but manager David Moyes confirmed that he would be playing no part in any games for the next two weeks.

The England man has made 13 appearances so far this season, and even found the back of the net against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League earlier in the month, but his absence only adds to United’s growing injury list that also includes Robin Van Persie (thigh) and Nani (knee).

Moyes had been hoping for a “Christmas miracle” in seeing the Dutch striker return for the Boxing Day encounter, but news of Nani’s injury came as a blow this week as he is not expected to return for the next seven weeks.
