The centre-back is currently playing a bit part role at the Emirates Stadium this season and Mertens has spoke of his desire to see his compatriot link up with him at the San Paolo in the new year.

The international teammates met on opposing sides this season during the Champions League, and now Mertens is leading the call for the former Ajax man to leave the north London outfit to come and join him in the Italian top flight.

Merterns also claimed that Napoli boss Rafa Benitez has also asked him to speak to Vermaelen in a bid to sway him toward the possibility of joining the San Paolo club.

“I have already told Vermaelen to come to Napoli 10 times,” he told Belgian newspaper Knack.

“The city is magnificent and even Benitez asked me to convince Vermaelen to come here.

“But Arsenal is a great club and it won’t be so easy for him to leave.”
