The Bluebirds had already submitted a £7m bid over the summer, but Roma weren’t willing to sell then. However, just four months on and they are said to be willing to listen to offers and have already begun searching for potential replacements.

The 26-year-old has already spent some time in England when he joined Aston Villa on loan for the second half of their 2010-11 campaign. However, he made a limited impact in the Midlands and then went on to join Chievo in Italy before leaving for Roma in 2012.

Injury has limited him to just five starts out of 11 appearances this season and both parties could consider a move away as a win-win situation.

Cardiff have maintained an interest in the player ever since the summer, but it could be Fulham who have the upper hand after they managed to bring in compatriot Clint Dempsey back to the club on a short term loan from the Seattle Sounders.
