The England international was taking part in a question-and-answer session on Twitter involving some of his 1.3 million followers when the 33-year-old was asked by a fan who he would like to replace him in west London, with Cole replying that he “hope to see him [Shaw] there to be honest.”

Cole has unusually found himself surplus to requirements in the capital for large parts of this campaign, with the attacking full back having mainly been warming the substitutes’ bench since the Blues surprisingly lost 2-0 to Newcastle United at St James’ Park in the Premier League at the start of November.

And despite the fact that Chelsea head coach Jose Mourinho did recall Cole to the first team for their top-flight encounter with Swansea City at the Bridge on Boxing Day, that has still not prevented rumours from circulating suggesting that the Englishman will quit the club come the end of this season, with Shaw the man expected to take his place in the capital next summer.
