The former San Siro boss has his sights firmly set on versatile Colombian midfielder Fredy Guarin, who has been in excellent form this term, and the Blues are in advanced talks to bring in the former FC Porto man in a £15m deal.

Mourinho may see the attack minded midfielder as a long term replacement for Frank Lampard, with the 35 year old England man set to be out of contract at the end of the season.

The Chelsea manager is also looking to land Italian international Andrea Ranocchia, who thi source claims is being viewed as a long-term replacement to John Terry.

Inter Milan are going through a fair amount of change with new manager Walter Mazzarri perhaps considering the merits of potential sales knowing that a great deal of investment is likely under new president Erick Thohir.

Though Chelsea have improved of late, with a home win over Liverpool keeping the Stamford Bridge side well up in the leading Premier League title chasing pack, Mourinho will certainly be considering the futures of his many under-performing squad members with the likes of Ashley Cole, Demba Ba, Kevin de Bruyne, John Obi Mikel and Juan Mata perhaps being potentially exit bound in January.
