Stamford Bridge side hope to lure Colombian to West London in January as tax crisis looks set to his principality club.
Chelsea are in advanced talks to sign AS Monaco striker Radamel Falcao as Jose Mourinho seeks to bring in the Colombian to lead his Blues attack.
CaughtOffside understands that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been in talks with his AS Monaco counterpart Dmitry Rybolovlev in recent weeks and that the pair may be close to an agreement that would see 27 year old Falcao leave the Stade Louis II in January, just months after his move to the principality side.
Falcao has enjoyed a successful start to his Ligue 1 career, scoring nine goals in 15 appearances, but his relationship with the club has suffered in recent weeks following his reaction being subbed by boss Claudio Ranieri during AS Monaco’s win over Nantes in late November.
AS Monaco also fear the very real possibility that they will be forced to move their head office into France so as to be taxed as any other side in the French top tier.
This move it all the more likely now that Prime Minister Francois Hollande looks set to push through a new 75% tax scheme on those who earn over €1m, which would leave the club liable to footing the bill for each of it’s high earners.
This will leave Rybolovlev considering his options and Chelsea’s willingness to offer £60m for Falcao would leave AS Monaco the chance to cash-in on the former Atletico Madrid man in a move that would represent a £7m profit on the sum they paid for the forward back in May, a face saving exercise given that Falcao has privately admitted his dissatisfaction with the lack of atmosphere at AS Monaco home fixtures and the general level of football in Ligue 1.
Mourinho wants to bring in a prolific striker having seen Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba struggle for consistency and the fact that Falcao would be available for Champions League action is an added bonus.
