The Italian international has spent the best part of three years with the Russian giants since signing on from Genoa, but he has also garnered interest from Serie A side Fiorentina too.
United still see Real Madrid full-back Fabio Coentrao as their first choice target, but believe a move for Cristico would hold fewer problems as he has already suggested that he wants to leave the Russian Premier League side as soon as possible.
The 27-year-old is being viewed as the ideal replacement for the Frenchman as Fabio, one half of the Da Silva twins, has yet to tie down a regular first team spot at Old Trafford and could either move on himself or be used as an understudy to whoever the new man in his position will be.
Cristico has collected 21 caps for the Italian national team and a source at United recently said: “We will ask the club [Zenit] for permission to speak to the player.”
