Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers apparently sees the teenager as a long term replacement for Steven Gerrard and there is certainly no doubt that the 18 year old is a hugely talented performer with a great deal of potential.

Rodgers agreed to loan defender Andre Wisdom join the Rams as part of the deal to land Hughes, who has already been capped at England Under 21 level on a half dozen occasions.

Rams boss Steve McClaren is not looking to sell Hughes in January but a move could occur in the summer, but even then the terms of the deal could well see the starlet return to Pride Park on a loan deal.

Rodgers is clearly a manager who adheres to a youthful transfer policy, having brought in the likes of Luis Alberto and Tiago Ilori over the summer whilst giving youngsters John Flanagan and Raheem Sterling the chance to shine in first team action this term.

Hughes has been a regular at Derby County this term, making 25 appearances in all competitions.
