The Portuguese international has found his way onto David Moyes’s January transfer window radar as the Old Trafford boss looks to bring in a defensive midfielder to add some bite to his side.
Moyes has had the tough tackler scouted on a number of occasions and may now well be ready to make an offer as Man United reportedly look to bring in two central midfielders.
The 21 year old rangy midfielder has a growing list of admirers since breaking into the Sporting Lisbon first team set-up after spending time out on loan in Belgium with Cercle Brugge, earning a national team call-up last month.
Sporting Lisbon have slapped a €45m release clause on Carvalho, who is tied to the Primeira Liga club until 2018, though one would imagine it would take a lesser fee to secure the youngster given the club’s financial problems which led to the sales of Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Tiago Ilori and Bruma, among others, to Norwich City, Liverpool and Galatasaray respectively.
Moyes has seen the likes of Tom Cleverley, Anderson and Marouane Fellaini, prior to his recent injury concerns, struggle for form and there is certainly a growing sense that the Man United midfield is something of a ‘problem area’ that needs improving.
