Southampton are readying a £12.5m bid for Cagliari defender Davide Astori according to the Independent.
Mauricio Pochettino is keen on strengthening his squad in January and is a big fan of the Italian international having previously conducted Serie A raids to bring in Gaston Ramirez and Pablo Osvaldo.
The Saints have struggled of late after a promising start to the season and Pochettino wants to bring a player who can challenge Dejan Lovren and Jose Fonte for a first team spot but will have to pay a big price for Astori, who featured for Italy at the Confederations Cup though could struggle to find his way into Cesare Prandelli’s 2014 World Cup squad.
Southampton looked defensively sound for much of the current campaign but have shipped in eight goals in their last four Premier League fixtures.
Astori moved to Cagliari from AC Milan back in 2008.
