West Ham’s desperate push to bring in a fresh attacking option has led Sam Allardyce to mount an £8m bid for Southampton striker Rickie Lambert according to the Daily Mirror.

The Hammers boss is still waiting to hand Andy Carroll his first start as a permanent member of his Upton Park squad and as such West Ham have been struggling to find the back of the net with any regularity.

West Ham are apparently confident they can convince England international Lambert to leave high flying Southampton to move to East London, despite the club’s current lowly position in the Premier League table.

They hope that an £8m bid would temp Saints chairman Nicola Cortese to sell and given that boss Mauricio Pochettino can call upon in-form forward Jay Rodriguez and Pablo Osvaldo there is perhaps scope for allowing veteran Lambert to leave.

The former Bristol Rovers man has netted an impressive 109 goals in 214 appearances for the South Coast side.

West Ham have also apparently agreed a deal for John Heitinga to join from Everton.
