The former France Under-21 international has been tracked by the Red Devils for some time now, with United thought to be considering making their own move for Cabella at some point during the January transfer window.

However, with still no sign of that happening, the north-east outfit are now hoping to be able to steal a march on their Premier League rivals by making their own move for the versatile 23-year-old, who can operate in as number of different positions, including in the centre of the park, as a playmaker or even on the wings too.

Montpellier president Louis Nicollin was seeking a fee of £14m for his star man back in November when United were thought to be keeping an eye out on the Frenchman, however, with the Ligue 1 side now in desperate need of revenue, it is understood that they would be willing to sell Cabella, who has a contract until June 2016, for a far lower figure.
